I maintain a long list of countries I’ve never been to and would like to visit that seems to grow each year. However, what’s not accounted for are the trips I’ve taken to the United Kingdom that now seem to have a somewhat regular cadence. From personal, business, and educational alike, my trips to London and Oxford over the past five years have been nothing short of amazing.
Flying there from the East Coast is a relatively seamless trek. Couple that with the lack of language barrier, smooth and clean public transportation system, plenty to do and see, and it just feels like a moment every time I visit. Of course, as an American traveling abroad I won’t mask that trips to places like London or other places more commonly romanticized does add to the endorphins and all around feels of escaping from the mundane day to day.
Some of my recommendations include afternoon tea at Fortnum and Mason (they also have the best gift baskets and treats to send home easily), exploring Camden Market (you’ll feel immersed into the local experience), Harrod’s (a shopping staple you might want to wear flats or another comfortable shoe given how large it is), Buckingham Palace and Big Ben (because nothing is more fun than being a true tourist), and catching an NFL game at Tottenham Stadium (NFL London Games do not disappoint).
I feel fortunate to now always have a reason to visit with family and friends currently living there, as well as school reunions. For now, I am open to ideas on how to best explore London and Oxford ahead of whenever my next visit is, and I hope you try and enjoy my recommendations if you plan on going soon.
